About Allegan County

Allegan CountyAllegan County is nestled between the Holland and Grand Rapids metro areas on the west side of the state.  While the county is largely agricultural today, it was initially settled during the high lumbering days of the 19th century; many early residents worked in the lumber mills. When the lumber was exhausted, these settlers turned to building extensive farming communities within the county.

Although Native American place names abound in West Michigan, the name Allegan was created by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, a scholar of Indian culture, in an effort to sound more “native.” Barely settled by the 1830s, county settlement began in earnest after speculators noted abundant sources of water power. In short order, steamboats were transversing the Kalamazoo River.

Although included as part of the Holland Metropolitan Statistical Area, the area is quickly becoming developed as Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo grow, and tourists often visit en route to the Holland Tulip Time Festival or their Lake Michigan vacation homes. For campers, hunters, and winter outdoorsmen, the Allegan State Game Area is a must see. Other outdoor areas of interest include the Saugatuck Dunes State Park and Lake Allegan.

Allegan County is a peaceful and enjoyable part of Michigan, but has its own crime, as does any place. If you or your family in Allegan County find yourself in need of help in time of legal trouble, do not hesitate to call Christine’s Bail Bonds, and we will be happy to assist you.
